Crack the Code: Summer Writing Classes
Use this chart to find the right line up for your kids this summer.
Hello all and happy summer!
I apologize for being quiet. Things have been busy over here: we moved to the Addison-area, Thoroughness & Charm has been published, and summer classical education conferences are starting this week!
To help reduce confusion, I created this Summer Writing Classes chart to help you see which classes are offered by grade level and type. Classes that your student could take all in the same week—that would go well together—are boxed.
Parents of rising seniors, please consider coming to the college admissions essay class June 30 and July 2 so that your student has an essay to bring to CDA College Application Boot Camp on July 21 through the 24. There will not be time spent brainstorming topics or developing ideas during the Boot Camp. That is best done before camp begins so that your student can get the most productive feedback during the day spent on essays.
Here’s more information on each class:
College Admissions Essay Writing Intensives: For $375, your student will receive two small group sessions where we will brainstorm topics, imitate some great pieces of creative non-fiction, and begin to work on finding their own narrative voice. Then, your student will get two follow up one-on-one 60 minute sessions where we will work on writing and editing their own admissions essay. Sign up for one of two sessions: June 30 and July 2 or July 28 and July 30. Intensives run from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at my home with one-on-ones the week following as scheduled with your student.
Sentence Dress-up Boot Camp for rising fifth and sixth graders. Sign your student up for one 90 minute session where we will focus on how to use strong verbs, quality adjectives, prepositional phrases, and adverbial clauses to form strong sentences. We will review parts of speech and begin to understand how important syntax is to creating a sentence that makes sense and sounds eloquent. All classes run from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM $39
Paragraph Writing for rising fifth and sixth graders. Sign your student up for one 90 minute session to learn a simple formula that helps your student learn how to construct a paragraph that flows logically and reads fluidly. We will focus on answering the question asked with a topic sentence, supporting his or her opinion, and discussing the implications or drawing connections between ideas, then ending with a conclusion. All classes run from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM $39
Essay Writing: Creating a Thesis and Drafting an Outline for rising seventh through ninth graders. Using the five topics of invention native to classical rhetoric, we will work on generating a thesis statement and developing an outline that argues that thesis logically. All classes run from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM $39
Essay Writing: Building a Logical Argument Paragraph by Paragraph for rising seventh through ninth graders. Body paragraphs are the meat of the academic essay. In fact, at times a teacher may only assign a paragraph response instead of a full essay. In this class, we’ll look at how to begin with a mini-thesis or topic sentence, support that topic sentence logically, blend quotations, and transition to your next thought. All classes run from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM $39
Essay Writing: Introductions and Conclusions for rising seventh through ninth graders. Getting started is always the hardest part of writing an essay, followed closely by knowing how to end. Using Office of Assertion as a guide, we’ll discuss and practice the different ways students can begin and end their essays. All classes run from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM $39
